Dentures
Patients missing several teeth or an entire arch of teeth (the entire upper or lower row) sometimes choose dentures to restore their smile. Dentures are custom-made for patient comfort and are adjustable after initial placement to prevent rubbing and irritating the mouth while eating and talking.
Dentures are removed for cleaning and are placed in water before going to bed. Sleeping without dentures allows the gums to rest and stimulates the natural cleaning process of the tongue and saliva. The dentures are replaced in the morning. Gentle daily brushing is required to prevent plaque buildup on the dentures, the same as brushing natural teeth. Effervescent cleansers are also available to make cleaning easier.
The type of denture required depends on how many teeth are missing.
A partial denture is used when only some teeth are missing. A pink or gum-colored base is made with the replacement teeth, usually with a metal framework that is designed to fit between the remaining teeth to hold it in place.
A complete denture is used when an entire arch is missing, either upper, lower, or both arches.
