Hygiene

Good dental hygiene should begin as a baby and continue through childhood to build a good regimen to last through adulthood. Brushing and flossing every day is the basis of a good routine, but getting a six-month professional cleaning is just as important.

Brushing and flossing between your teeth is the most effective way to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay, and using an antimicrobial toothpaste also helps prevent tooth decay.

The toothbrush should fit the shape and size of your mouth. It should have soft bristles and be able to reach the back teeth easily. All toothbrushes should be replaced every six months. If you are getting the recommended professional cleaning every six months, Dr. Alvarez will supply you with a replacement toothbrush, as well as samples of toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. These samples are great for packing in overnight bags, by the way.

Flossing is important because it gets in between the teeth where brushes can’t reach. If food gets trapped between your teeth, it allows for bacteria to grow and cause cavities to form. Flossing also helps prevent gum disease.

Flossing is often described as too difficult and taking too much time, but floss picks and water flossers are widely available to make it easier. Both have handles for better manipulation and more effective flossing.
